New Orleans Flood protection structures (via NYT)

Thanks to the US Army Corps of Engineers and $14.5 billion in US tax dollars, New Orleans is now protected by over 133 miles of levees, flood walls, and gates, and the largest pumping station on the planet (over 150,000 gallons per second).

The system was built to prevent the kind of flooding that has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year (the 100-year storm), the same as used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to determine who must buy flood insurance to qualify for federally regulated or insured mortgages.
